Baltimore, MD Historic Paint Analysis
Matthew J. Mosca - Historic Paint Finishes Consultant
|
Since 1972, Matthew J. Mosca has been engaged in the examination of historic paint finishes. These projects have varied from the examination of a small group of samples, to large projects involving hundreds of paint samples. Every project is tailored to provide the specific answers needed as indicated by the client. A paint analysis program can be described as having three major parts: the on-site work, the laboratory examination and the report writing.
On-site survey: This provides the consultant with invaluable information about the building or structure from which the paint samples were taken. On-site areas and elements from which paint samples are collected are noted and exposure areas are done to uncover the original finish or subsequent finishes of significance.
Laboratory examination: All samples are examined using the Olympus SZ-1145 stereomicroscopy under controlled lighting, provided by fiber-optics illumination. Samples may be subject to a series of procedures: some will be mounted in polymer resin, cut and polished for photomicrography (photographs through the microscope) that forms a significant part of the final report. Exposure to full-spectrum or part-spectrum light is used to help reduce the yellowing of oil media. Some samples will be used for chemical spot testing for the identification of specific pigments. Polarized-light microscop is also undertaken when necessary, using the Olympus BMAX-50 microscope. Polarized-light microscopy identifies pigments and media according to the McCrone Research Institute system of particle identification, which may be the most important function of serious paint research.

Report writing brings together all the aforementioned material in a comprehensible manner and includes color samples, photomicrographs, reconstructed finishes and any additional pertinent information, such as that from known documents. The finished reports are provided electronically and one printed copy is also sent to the client. Additional copies may be provided to meet specific requirements.
